Welcome, friends of Palazzo Riccamboni! Today, we’re taking you on a journey to discover a true gem of Lake Garda, an experience that blends history, nature and breathtaking views: the Ponale Path. If you love walks and bike rides with spectacular vistas, this is the place for you.

The Ponale Path, connecting Riva del Garda to the Ledro Valley, isn’t just a simple trail; it’s a real journey through history. Built in the mid-19th century, this road was the only link between the two locations before the construction of the tunnel. Today, it has been transformed into a magnificent pedestrian and cycle path, accessible to everyone and incredibly charming.

Breathtaking Views Around Every Bend: Must-See Spots

What makes the Ponale Path truly unique are its spectacular views over Lake Garda. Get ready to be amazed: around every bend, through every tunnel carved into the rock, unforgettable vistas open up. The deep blue of the lake merges with the lush green vegetation and the gray of the rock faces, creating a natural masterpiece of rare beauty. You’ll see Riva del Garda from above, with its colorful houses reflected in the water, and the lake stretching as far as the eye can see, offering unique emotions and the feeling of literally walking suspended between sky and water.

It’s the ideal place to capture memorable photos or simply to pause and contemplate the grandeur of nature. The fresh air and tranquil atmosphere will envelop you, making you forget the stresses of daily life.

But what are the best spots to admire the landscape? Here are a few to mark on your map:

  • The “Vecchia Ponale” Belvedere: This is one of the first and most famous panoramic points you’ll encounter as you ascend from Riva del Garda. Here, the view opens majestically over the lower Garda, embracing Riva del Garda with its harbor, the Rocchetta, and the imposing Monte Baldo on the opposite shore. Benches invite you to a contemplative stop, making this spot perfect for a first and unforgettable photograph.
  • The Village of Pregasina: Continuing along the path, after a series of switchbacks and evocative tunnels, you’ll reach the elevation of Pregasina. While the village itself isn’t directly on the main path, the section of the Ponale that runs alongside it offers some of the most dramatic and spectacular views. From here, the lake reveals its full expanse, framed by steep rock walls that plunge into the water. The small church of San Giorgio, standing on a rocky spur above the lake, offers an iconic image and further charming glimpses. Some prefer to take a detour to reach Pregasina and enjoy an even higher and more intimate perspective.
  • The Tunnels and Natural Balconies: Don’t underestimate the beauty revealed at the exit of each tunnel. Often, after the darkness of the tunnel, a breathtaking panorama suddenly opens up, almost like a natural window onto the lake. Some of these openings serve as true “balconies” on the rock, offering unique perspectives and privileged viewpoints, ideal for admiring the intense blue of the waters below and the dense vegetation.
  • Spontaneous Rest Stops: Even outside of specific points, the path is dotted with small areas where the rock opens up, or where a low wall allows you to safely peer out. Every now and then, simply stop, turn around, and let yourself be surprised by the view. The lake changes shades with the sunlight, and every moment offers a different and enchanting perspective.

A Path for Everyone: On Foot or By Bike

The beauty of the Ponale Path lies in its versatility. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just a casual walker, a passionate cyclist or a family with children, you’ll find the right route for you.

  • On Foot: For walkers, the path offers a consistent but never overly strenuous climb. It’s an excellent opportunity to enjoy nature at a slower pace, lingering to admire every detail and breathe the clean air. The most scenic section is the initial one from Riva del Garda up to the vicinity of Pregasina.
  • By Bike: For cycling enthusiasts, the Ponale is a true paradise. The road, although unpaved, is well-maintained and suitable even for non-professional mountain bikes. The ride is an exhilarating experience, with the breeze caressing your face and the lake accompanying you alongside. Many cyclists choose to continue to Lake Ledro for an even more complete adventure.

Useful Tips for Your Adventure

  • Starting Point: The path begins just outside the center of Riva del Garda, a short walk from the tunnel leading towards the Ledro Valley. It’s well-marked.
  • Duration: On foot, allow about 1.5 – 2 hours for the uphill climb alone to the elevation of Pregasina. By bike, it takes significantly less time, always depending on your pace and whether you plan to continue towards Ledro.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking or cycling on gravel paths. A hat and sunglasses are recommended on sunny days.
  • Water and Snacks: Don’t forget to bring enough water, especially on warmer days, and some snacks. There are no refreshment points directly on the Ponale Path until Pregasina.
  • Safety: Always pay attention to signs and other users of the path, especially cyclists and pedestrians who share the space. Some sections can be narrow, so it’s important to keep to the right and signal your presence, especially when cycling.

The Ponale Path is an experience we highly recommend to all guests of Palazzo Riccamboni. It’s a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the beauty of Lake Garda, enjoy unforgettable views, and have an outdoor adventure. Don’t miss the opportunity to discover this corner of paradise!

We look forward to hearing about your experiences!
